The Springboks, having edged out the All Blacks 12-11 to lift the Webb Ellis Cup in October, will hope to avenge last season's 35-20 loss in Auckland.
After missing the previous victory over the Wallabies, Kurt-Lee Arendse has been restored to the starting XV. The prolific Springbok winger, who has 17 tries in just 19 caps, has already scored twice this Championship.
The Springboks also welcome back 124-cap man mountain Eben Etzebeth, who has been passed fit to take his place on the bench. Etzebeth’s inclusion means the second row could overtake Victor Matfield as the most capped Springbok of all time if he features in all four remaining tests of the Rugby Championship.
We will reach the midway mark of the tournament after today's matches and South Africa have the chance to extend their lead at the top of the table. The world champions have been perfect up to now, beating Australia twice on their own turf to take control. On top of their 33-7 and 30-12 victories, the Springboks have even collected two bonus points. South Africa remain the team to beat.
Rassie Erasmus' Springboks side picked up their second Webb Ellis Cup in a row at the end of October 2023 in Paris, pipping the All Blacks 12-11 at the Stade de France to match New Zealand's previous record of back-to-back World Cup titles. The century-long rivalry is renewed in a few hours' time, with the All Blacks hoping to exact revenge.
The Springboks are also leading the way after two rounds of this year's Rugby Championship, sitting top of the ladder as the only unbeaten team following two wins from two so far – both comprehensive victories against the Wallabies. The All Blacks suffered a shock 38-30 loss at home to Argentina in Round One, but responded with a 42-10 win in Auckland last time out.
This is a fixture which rarely, if ever, disappoints, and as two of the most well-known sides in world sport head into battle once more, The Sporting News has all the details on how fans in Australia can watch this Rugby Championship match.
New Zealand suffered a surprise defeat by Argentina in the first round, but they bounced back to beat the same opponent 42-10 last time out. A double-header in South Africa is about as tricky as international rugby gets right now, so the All Blacks will have to dig deep to pick up a positive result here. However, New Zealand did win the last meeting between this pair on South African soil.
Former captain Sam Cane, another player with vast experience, has been named in the All Blacks’ starting line-up for the first time since receiving an early—and costly—red card in the World Cup final.
Those seven words can only be described as the pinnacle fixture (outside of a Rugby World Cup final) between rugby’s two fiercest rivals and a match that is circled by fans, coaches and players alike when schedules are announced.
For All Blacks winger Mark Tele’a, a trip to the Republic has an extra layer of importance – one where in a different world, he could have been playing at home, rather than away.
Sam Cane has been named to start for the All Blacks against All Blacks on Sunday morning, in one of two changes to the starting XV.
Cane will make his first start for the All Blacks since last year’s Rugby World Cup final at openside flanker, with captain Scott Barrett to make his return from a finger injury to take his place in the starting lineup at lock.
Caleb Clarke and Will Jordan again favoured on the wings and Tamaiti Williams holding down the loosehead prop with Ethan de Groot (neck) ruled out of the two-test tour. Dalton Papali’i was also ruled out of this test due to a thumb injury.
On the bench, Sam Darry remains in the match-day squad in a reserve role with Barrett’s return, while Samipeni Finau will provide cover in the loose forwards.
“To play All Blacks at Ellis Park is one of the greatest tests you can prepare for; we will embrace the occasion,” All Blacks coach Scott Robertson said.
Tele’a’s father is All Blacksn, his mother Samoan, and by right he qualified to play rugby for three nations. He opted to represent the country of his birth, New Zealand.
1 Ox Nche, 2 Bongi Mbonambi, 3 Frans Malherbe; 4 Pieter-Steph du Toit, 5 Ruan Nortje; 6 Siya Kolisi (c), 7 Ben-Jason Dixon , 8 Jasper Wiese; 9 Cobus Reinach, 10 Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu; 11 Kurt-Lee Arendse, 12 Damian de Allende, 13 Jesse Kriel, 14 Cheslin Kolbe; 15 Aphelele Fassi.
1 Tamaiti Williams, 2 Codie Taylor, 3 Tyrel Lomax; 4 Scott Barrett, 5 Tupou Vaa’i; 6 Ethan Blackadder, 7 Sam Cane, 8 Ardie Savea; 9 TJ Perenara, 10 Damian McKenzie; 11 Caleb Clarke, 12 Jordie Barrett, 13 Rieko Ioane, 14 Will Jordan; 15 Beauden Barrett.
Continuity could prove key for the All Blacks though, with new head coach Scott Robertson rotating just two players from their 42-10 victory over Argentina in Auckland in Round 2. Former captain Sam Cane and newly-appointed skipper Scott Barrett both return to the forward pack, with Sam Darry benched and Dalton Papalii dropping out of the squad altogether.
New Zealand staring XV: Beauden Barrett, Will Jordan, Rieko Ioane, Jordie Barrett, Caleb Clarke, Damian McKenzie, TJ Perenara; Tamaiti Williams, Codie Taylor, Tyrel Lomax, Scott Barrett, Tupou Vaa'i, Ethan Blackadder, Sam Cane, Ardie Savea.
New Zealand replacements: Asafo Aumua, Ofa Tu'ungafasi, Fletcher Newell, Sam Darry, Samipeni Finau, Cortez Ratima, Anton Lienert-Brown, Mark Tele'a.
